About cyber insurance

Cyber-attacks are a growing risk for businesses of every size. Even so, many organisations are slow to put proper controls around cyber risks in place. Heavy dependence on IT only increases that exposure. Meijers believes in solid cyber protection and advises on a range of cyber insurance solutions.

With our expertise in cyber insurance, your organisation can protect itself against the financial impact of a cyber incident while also getting practical support to strengthen your overall cyber security. Meijers builds customised solutions tailored to your company's specific risk profile.

Common misconceptions

I am not liable if my IT provider is hacked

Any organisation that collects and processes personal or business data, whether in-house or through third parties, remains legally responsible for its confidentiality, availability, and accuracy. Outsourcing the work does not transfer the liability.

We have our security organised

Even professional cloud and IT providers know they can be targeted by hackers. And wherever people are involved, mistakes happen. A phishing email, a wrong attachment opened, or information sent to the wrong address can be all a cybercriminal needs to break into your corporate network. Third-party software vulnerabilities add another layer of risk. Think of cyber insurance the way you think of fire insurance. Even with sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and fire-resistant equipment in place, the risk of a fire never disappears entirely. That is exactly why companies with strong fire prevention measures still carry fire insurance.

We can do without ICT for a while

Almost every organisation runs on communication and information. Email, IP telephony, video calls: it all flows through the internet. And every company stores its data digitally. When that connectivity breaks down, so does the business. Picture a full week without email, access to your documents, or working phones. That is the reality cyber insurance is designed to prevent.

No matter the situation, insurers won't pay out anyway

Cyber incidents are notoriously hard to define in legal terms, so insurance policies typically use a broad definition such as "any unauthorised access". A data breach caused by a lost laptop, for example, falls squarely within that definition. In practice, this means coverage disputes about the nature of an incident are rare.

We are perfectly capable of responding to a cyber incident ourselves

In practice, handling a breach well takes a coordinated team: outside specialists, your IT provider, and your own people working together. That might mean a negotiator who deals with the hackers, a digital forensics expert, and a lawyer. A cyber insurer can bring all of these resources together and cover the costs. We also recommend having a business continuity plan in place before an incident occurs. This sets out how your operations keep running during a cyber event. An incident response plan limits the damage as it unfolds, while a recovery plan gets your software and data back online once the dust settles.

In my 25 years in IT, nine were spent in cyber consultancy. I've often asked myself whether you should insure cyber risks at all, because prevention is always better than a cure. But when something does go wrong, operations grind to a halt and third-party claims can follow. Your organisation needs to act fast. Can you handle that damage on your own? Who do you call? What do you do first?

I believe in a complete solution: prevention, detection, and response, backed by damage coverage and a dedicated team of First Response experts. If Meijers can't provide the right solution, I'll point you to someone who can. Transparency, commitment, and expertise are non-negotiable. We won't make it sound better than it is.

A common pitfall is chasing airtight protection. That goal is neither realistic nor necessary. The smarter (and more cost-effective) approach is staying on top of your "attack landscape". The word "attack" covers a lot of ground: an internal error that brings down your IT systems, a sudden infrastructure failure, an opportunistic hack by a bored amateur, or a targeted strike by an organised criminal group. On top of that, you need to stay compliant with relevant laws and regulations to protect client trust, guard your reputation, and avoid fines.

We would be glad to sit down with you, identify the threats most relevant to your business, and work out which measures give you the best protection for your budget.

Make it difficult for them

Running software updates, spotting suspicious emails, managing passwords: small actions like these make a real difference. There is a lot you can handle yourself, and it goes beyond the technical side. Behaviour, awareness, and well-adapted processes all play a significant role. The goal is to strengthen your cyber security without unnecessary cost.

Meijers brings deep expertise and a broad network of cyber specialists to help you take the right steps. We are glad to talk through your specific situation. Would you like a consultation?

Transferring part of your cyber risk is a sensible and widely used approach. Direct damages and third-party claims arising from an incident can both be covered, and nearly every insurer in this space also provides a dedicated specialist team to guide you through the critical first response.

We are glad to talk through your specific situation and find the best fit from a broad range of insurers.

Have an expert team ready

Spotting a cyber incident early matters: the quicker you respond, the less likely things will spiral. The key is finding the right balance between detection and cost, because investing in the right tools genuinely reduces cyber risk. There is no universal answer here; every situation calls for its own approach.

We are glad to talk through your organisation's current level of readiness and what makes sense for you.
